Spring Lawn Care Explained - Colorado Springs
“Spring into Action: Your Month-by-Month Lawn Care Guide”
Spring is officially here, and it’s the perfect time to give your yard a little TLC! A well-maintained lawn doesn’t just boost curb appeal—it also sets the stage for a healthy, vibrant outdoor space all season long. Here’s a simple timeline to keep your yard in top shape this spring:
March: Clean-Up & Inspection
Start by raking up any leftover leaves, twigs, and winter debris to help your lawn “wake up” and soak in the sunlight. Take a quick look for any winter damage or snow mold, and check your sprinkler system so it’s ready to go by late spring. If you need repairs, now’s the time to schedule them!
Late March – April: Aeration & Weed Prevention
If your lawn feels compacted, aeration can help loosen things up and improve root health. Spring is also the window for applying a pre-emergent to stop weeds before they sprout. Just a heads-up—if you’re planning to overseed, skip the typical pre-emergent or use a special fertilizer that won’t block new grass growth.
Mid-Spring (April – May): Fertilizing & Watering
A balanced, slow-release fertilizer helps your lawn recover from winter stress. Be sure to wait until late April or May for cool-season grass. As the weather warms, ease into a watering routine—start light, then work up to about an inch per week by May. Remember, watering deeply and less often encourages stronger roots!
Mowing & Lawn Repairs
Once your grass starts growing in April, sharpen those mower blades and stick to the “one-third rule” (never cut off more than a third of the blade height at once). If you have bare patches that need overseeding, get them taken care of early in the season so new grass has time to establish.
